Here are some statistics about the price distribution of the iPhone apps in the AppStore. As you can see, half of them are less than $1.0 (which usually means - crappy app). 5% of the apps cost more than $10, which is a lot, considering the risk you have when you pay for something without a trial first...

Oh, by the way, 24% of the apps are freewares. Unfortunately, I found that most of them are completely useless or a demo version of the paid one.
