Lost your WinMo phone? You can find it with WM GoHome!

zn0oy8

Here's something cool I found in OldSAP's blog.

WM GoHome is a "hidden" application that will be activated only when receiving a special SMS.

The application also includes a remote control via SMS, and claims that it will somehow switch modes in case the SIM card will be replaced (in case the device is stolen) - which means continues support even after switching the SIM card.

Here's some of the documentation found in the developer's site:

"WM GoHome is application works like service. It is waiting for special SMS message that processing depends on the parameters sent in this message. After receiving this message, WMGH (WM GoHome) initialize GPS receiver and sends SMS message with current location, altitude and speed to the phone number, it received the initialization message from.

WM GoHome is mainly intended for localization of the device, but it can do much more.

Via special SMS messages you can easy control the remote device. WMGH can start predefined applications, can change the device configuration or send another information to the predefined phone numbers.

A lot of users asked us 'What happens, if a device will be stolen and thief will change the SIM card?' The answer is: WM GoHome will detect that current SIM card is not authorized and switch itself to the attention mode. In that mode is not possible configure the application anymore, and in this mode will WMGH send the SMS to the authorized Change SIM Tracker with the information about the new SIM phone number. Then it is possible to localize device again"

Check out the developer's site for more information

Mobile Spoon Feeding - Palm Pre, iPhone

spoonfeeding6 OK friends, you know I cannot wait to put my hands on one of those cool Palm Pre.

Until I manage to do so, here's some new information I found about the upcoming device, followed by some iPhone news.

Palm Pre's Camera:

cam Well, although it is just 3.2 megapixel it includes the latest imaging correction software from DxO Labs (leading player in the field of image analysis and correction).

It will improve significantly the quality of the images, especially for close-up pictures which are usually problematic.

The Adaptive Lighting will give a much brighter and better picture in low light conditions (hey, I think the iPhone does that too! Sue them Apple!)

You can read much more and see some example picture in here.

Prelauncher Pre to be released during February?

I guess not, but there are tons of rumors out there, and you know rumors, there's always behind them...

Boy, I sure cannot wait for February to end!

More rumors in PreCentral

6 Years Later- Was Steve Jobs the Smartest Man in Music-?

Some bullets from an interview conducted 6 years ago, seems like Jobs knew what he was talking about...

Read more in the iPhone Blog

iPhone 3 rumors:ipod_touch_faster_iphone_3g

Some code snippets show the possibility of a new version of the iPhone coming soon (soon means, according to the rumors - July).

Read more about it in here and here.

That's it for this week's spoon feeding. More feeds to come soon.

Mobile Spoon Presents: January's Favorites!

Mobilespoon_Effect4

January is just about to end and I figured it's a good time to summarize this month's most popular posts:

A lot of tweaks related to Windows Mobile and especially the Touch Pro were released during January (and also December), the popularity of those posts in general was high.

All the tweaks can be found under the label Tweaks.

If you are looking for HTC stuff specifically, use the Diamond or Pro labels. They will probably take you where you want to go.

But enough with that, here's the 5 most popular posts of the month:

Number #5: Palm Pre - WebOS User Interface Video Tour

small_Palm_Pre This one is simply a great video demonstration of the amazing upcoming Palm Pre with the new operating system which is threatening to give a good fight to the iPhone!

Read post

Number #4: Tweak- Spice things up in your WinMo Task Bar with 'Colored Top Bar'

This cool freeware will add some colors to the standard task bar.

Read post

Number #3: FingerMenu - Finger Friendly Menu for Windows Mobile

Another great freeware which will turn your Windows mobile device into a much more finger friendly device.

Read post

Number #2: PalmPre vs. iPhone vs. WinMo vs. Android vs. BlackBerry - Fight!

runble

This post caused me a lot of troubles with the great friends over at MobilitySite. I wrote the post in there as well, and some Android dudes which obviously did not like the results of it, decided to fight back. The result was around 40 furious comments to the post, few of them included personal accusations only real gadgets geeks can write...

But we don't mind, right? 3.39% of the entire page views of this month belongs to this article. Here's the post.

Number #1

small_HTC copy The undisputed number #1 post of this month is the one with 6.87% page views: 10 tips for true happiness with HTC Touch Pro / Fuze / Diamond!

Great, so most of the readers probably read this already, but in case not - now is the time to check it out!

Read post

As usual, comments, questions or request are more than welcome!

Is that windows Mobile 6.5 running on HTC Touch Pro?

winmo

OK, it's not. I don't want to deceive you guys, but I just had to see how the new WinMo (supposedly) design may look like on my Touch Pro...

I just saw that more 6.5 images continue to roll and here's the latest stuff I found at the XDA-Developers:

333-1

Are they real?

I'm not sure. I can definitely imagine some lonely photoshop designer having a great laugh on all of us right now...

Is WinMo 6.5 going to look like that, eventually?

I bet not. From my experience as a UI developer I can say that there's always the last minute "fine tune" work which involves fonts, icons, and other cosmetic work. In addition, as this is a localized beta version migrated to an older device - it cannot be an indication of the real thing, just a direction.

Let's see what we can learn from it:

Lock Screen:

5Nice.

I'm not a huge fan of the iPhone lock screen, it's annoying and I wish I could remove it. Here, it seems like the time is located in an unusual position (too low), not sure I like it...

Honeycomb screen:

4Cool stuff, I think it's nice, even though it's not as amazing as the stuff we've seen from Palm Pre.

Notice there's a cut cell in the bottom, indicating that this screen can include a lot of items and probably a way to scroll them using a finger gesture.

I think it's a refreshing addition to the basic 'Today' screen.

Today Screen:

1

Not sure I know how to react to that.

On one hand - the expandable gradient/transparent panels look nice (I sure like it in the standard edition). On the other hand, it currently cannot match SPB Mobile Shell or the TouchFlo 3D.

I can only assume that the final user interface will look more like the standard edition, which means much better...

 imgC1 img15

Internet Explorer

Naturally there's not much to say in regards to the actual browsing experience, but we can spot a zoom bar, and the bottom area that includes couple of icons a-la-iPhone. Nice.

Oh, one more thing: notice the transparency of the top bar which looks like Vista (which I actually don't like so much...)

3  2

Those 2 screenshots are yet another example that the UI is not finalized yet: I assume the actual release will have better icons and better looking 'X' button...

Overall, I'm not too impressed, but I'm optimistic. I believe the official 6.5 user interface will have a lot of cool improvements.

iLap - Free GPS Racing Lap Timer for Windows Mobile

HTCTyTnII

I found the following freeware in a great site I'm following for a long time now - 1800PocketPC. This site is one of the best resources for good quality WinMo freewares.

iLap is a free laptimer for Windows Mobile, but the interesting part of it is that it uses GPS to show information about each lap.

It is using GPS information and has the following features:

  • GPS based windows mobile lap timer.
  • Use either an external or internal GPS
  • Supports Windows Mobile 5 & 6.
  • Supports 320×240, 640×480, 800×600 and 200×400 displays.
  • Records lap, section and split times for your track day sessions or for all kinds of sports like motorcycle/car track days, bicycling, running, sailing.
  • User defined tracks that can be saved and reloaded for reuse on return to a particular track for comparison to earlier sessions.
  • Displays lap time and comparison against fastest lap and speed at gate passage.
  • Review and browse lap and split times after the session.
  • Supports metric and imperial (english) units.
  • Easy definition of start/finish and split time gates using large on screen buttons for adding and removing gates on the fly out on the track.
  • Large, clear lap timer display for easy viewing.
  • No beacon/transmitter needed.

The application has a really nice user interface. Check for yourself:

Tower Defense games, gymnastics, and one bad addiction

Today at the gym, while others were doing this:

body-builder

I was doing this:

fiueld (playing...)

I know, it's not exactly what you are supposed to do in a gym, but I'm addicted.

I'm addicted to tower defense games. Especially Field Runner.

If (like me few weeks ago) you never heard the term Tower Defense before, here's some Wiki stuff:

"The goal is to try to stop enemies from crossing the map by building towers which shoot at them as they pass. Enemies and towers usually have varied abilities and costs. When an enemy is defeated the player earns money or points, which are used to buy or upgrade towers".

I see it as a combination of a strategy game (but a very basic one) with some elements of luck and gambling.

The result is a great way to pass the time but also a horrible way to waste important time.

In any event, here's some of the games I liked under this genre:

Field runner:

IMG_0006 (1)

IMG_0007

Field runner is the first iPhone game I'm actually playing!

I have installed over 100 games but nothing was really worth spending time on.

But all of this has changed now, I'm totally addicted to this great game. It has good animation, fantastic sounds, perfect user interface which makes it a perfect game for me.

IMG_0008

The thing that makes this game so great is that you control the course of the enemies as you can simply design a path/maze where they will have to walk through. (see video below)

Creeps:

OK, so now that I'm totally addicted to tower defense games, I was certain it will be easy to find lot's of great games from this genre.

Well, I was wrong. There are plenty of BAD ONES. iPhone has few more which I immediately deleted, and winMo actually does not have so many alternatives.

One good alternative for the iPhone, is the Creeps.

IMG_0002

Creeps is really great as well. The path is given, but you have to not only defend the bed, but also to destroy some fixed elements in order to make room for more weapon.

IMG_0005  IMG_0003 (2)

It has some great sounds as well, and it's a lot of fun.

The game includes many levels and a lot of weapons, which is also fun.

IMG_0004

TapDefense (the only freeware in this post...)

tapdefense_tower tapdefense

TapDefense is the free alternative for Tower Defense games (iPhone). It was promoted as the best free iPhone game in 2008, but I have to admit I think that Field Runner is much better mainly due to the ease of operating the game and user interface.

I started using TapDefense but stopped after a short while... who can play it when Field Runner is installed?

Nevertheless, if you are looking for something completely free, this is an option.

TapDefense is freely available for download in App Store. You can download it via this direct link.

2 Windows Mobile alternatives:

If you are looking for a TD game for windows mobile, here's the only ones I found so far that looks cool:

Azgard Defence

From the developers MoreGames Entertainment, who has made great games for our Pocket PCs like Orions: Legend of Wizards and Enslave, here's the winMo TD game called Azgard Defence.

azgard-defence-2

It's not so new, but looks like it has a lot of features:

* Over 20 creatures: Demons, Ogres, Ghosts, Dragons, Knights, etc.
* 15 Tower types, each with it's own attack. This includes Poison, Corruption, Fire, Splash, Slow, and more.
* Level Editor to build your own maps.
* Amazing visuals, particles, explosions.
* Save/Load at any time.
* Music, Sound effects, Levels of diffuculty, etc - just everything to make sure that you will enjoy this game at a maximum.

azgard_defence_pocket_pc1

You can try Azgard Defence for yourself here or buy it from ClickGamer.

Resco Defender

This one is another alternative, although I must admit it doesn't look so great.

Nevertheless, here's some screenshots and a link, in case you want to try it out:

defender_02 defender_00

Check out Resco Defender

That's it for today, I'm off, have to take my daily Field Runner doze...

Coming soon - FireFox on HTC Touch Pro?

Copy of TOUCH_PRO copyFENNEC - the FireFox mobile browser will probably hit the market very soon (1-2 weeks?)

Apperantly the first version will be designed and demo'ed  on an HTC Touch Pro!

The firefox team wrote the following:

"We are targeting a Milestone release for the first week of February, targeting the HTC touch pro. "

Touch Pro?

We're cool with that! Bring it. We'll take care of the rest...

The Gartner's analysts just published a list of eight technologies to watch for the next two years.

Here's the items in short:

Gartner’s eight mobile technologies to watch in 2009 and 2010

  1. Bluetooth 3.0 —The Bluetooth 3.0 specification will be released in 2009 (at which point its feature set will be frozen), with devices starting to arrive around 2010. Bluetooth 3.0 will likely include features such as ultra-low-power mode that will enable new devices, such as peripherals and sensors, and new applications, such as health monitoring. Bluetooth originated as a set of protocols operating over a single wireless bearer technology. Bluetooth 3.0 is intended to support three bearers: "classic" Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ultrawideband (UWB). It's possible that more bearers will be supported in the future. Wi-Fi is likely to be a more important supplementary bearer than UWB in the short term, because of its broad availability. Wi-Fi will allow high-end phones to rapidly transfer large volumes of data.
  2. Mobile User Interfaces (UIs) — UIs have a major effect on device usability and supportability. They will also be an area of intense competition in 2009 and 2010, with manufacturers using UIs to differentiate their handsets and platforms. New and more-diverse UIs will complicate the development and support of business-to-employee (B2E) and business-to-consumer (B2C) applications. Organizations should expect more user demands for support of specific device models driven by interface preferences. Companies should also expect consumer interfaces to drive new expectations of application behavior and performance. Better interfaces will make the mobile Web more accessible on small devices, and will be a better channel to customers and employees.
  3. Location Sensing — Location awareness makes mobile applications more powerful and useful; in the future, location will be a key component of contextual applications. Location sensing will also enhance systems, such as mobile presence and mobile social networking. The growing maturity of on-campus location sensing using Wi-Fi opens up a range of new applications exploiting the location of equipment or people. Organizations delivering business or consumer applications should explore the potential of location sensing; however, exploiting it may create new privacy and security challenges.
  4. 802.11n — 802.11n boosts Wi-Fi data rates to between 100 Mbps and 300 Mbps, and the multiple-input, multiple-output technology used by 802.11n offers the potential for better coverage in some situations. 802.11n is likely to be a long-lived standard that will define Wi-Fi performance for several years. High-speed Wi-Fi is desirable to stream media around the home and office. From an organizational perspective, 802.11n is disruptive; it's complex to configure, and is a "rip and replace" technology that requires new access points, new client wireless interfaces, new backbone networks and a new power over Ethernet standard. However, 802.11n is the first Wi-Fi technology to offer performance on a par with the 100 Mbps Ethernet commonly used for wired connections to office PCs. It is, therefore, an enabler for the all-wireless office, and should be considered by companies equipping new offices or replacing older 802.11a/b/g systems in 2009 and 2010.
  5. Display Technologies — Displays constrain many characteristics of both mobile devices and applications. During 2009 and 2010, several new display technologies will impact the marketplace, including active pixel displays, passive displays and pico projectors. Pico projectors enable new mobile use cases (for example, instant presentations projected on a desktop to display information in a brief, face-to-face sales meeting). Battery life improvements are welcome for any user. Good off-axis viewing enables images and information to be shared more easily. Passive displays in devices, such as e-book readers, offer new ways to distribute and consume documents. Display technology will also become an important differentiator and a user selection criterion.
  6. Mobile Web and Widgets — The mobile Web is emerging as a low-cost way to deliver simple mobile applications to a range of devices. It has some limitations that will not be addressed by 2010 (for example, there will be no universal standards for browser access to handset services, such as the camera or GPS). However, the mobile Web offers a compelling total cost of ownership (TCO) advantage over thick-client applications. Widgets (small mobile Web applets) are supported by many mobile browsers, and provide a way to stream simple feeds to handsets and small screens. Mobile Web applications will be a part of most B2C mobile strategies. Thin-client applications are also emerging as a practical solution to on-campus enterprise applications using Wi-Fi or cellular connections.
  7. Cellular Broadband — Wireless broadband exploded in 2008, driven by the availability of technologies such as high-speed downlink packet access and high-speed uplink packet access, combined with attractive pricing from cellular operators. The performance of high-speed packet access (HSPA) provides a megabit or two of bandwidth in uplink and downlink directions, and often more. In many regions, HSPA provides adequate connectivity to replace Wi-Fi "hot spots," and the availability of mature chipsets enables organizations to purchase laptops with built-in cellular modules that provide superior performance to add-on cards or dongles.
  8. Near Field Communication (NFC) — NFC provides a simple and secure way for handsets to communicate over distances of a centimeter or two. NFC is emerging as a leading standard for applications such as mobile payment, with successful trials conducted in several countries. It also has wider applications, such as "touch to exchange information" (for example, to transfer an image from a handset to a digital photo frame, or for a handset to pick up a virtual discount voucher). Gartner does not expect much of the NFC payment or other activities to become common, even by 2010, in mature markets, such as Western Europe and the U.S. NFC is likely to become important sooner in emerging markets, with some deployments starting by 2010.
