Personalize your friends ringtones with the SpoonRing

spoonring2Friendly2

After writing about Vito's Ringtone Editor, I remembered I once developed a small tool called the SpoonRing.

SpoonRing is a simple but friendly way to assign MP3 ringtones to specific contacts.

I think that if you want to completely mess up and personalize your friends' ringtones - SpoonRing is a cool tool that does that for free.

So there you have it, Create your own ringtones using Ringtone Editor and then use the SpoonRing to easily assign your new ringtones to your friends.

Check out the SpoonRing in here.

Samsung Omnia Thoughts - Week #2

dark-phoenix_super copy

It has been my second (or is it third?) week with the Samsung Omnia and I have to say this is one of the best WinMo phones I've used, and above all - it's a fun one.

Read my first week's review:
Samsung Omnia Thoughts - Week #1.

In this review I would like to talk about the additional software that comes with the Omnia which is mostly impressive and useful.

But, before we begin, like every professional blogger, I would like to begin with some professional screenshots of the Omnia, combined with some other Samsung phones I poses, just to show you how professional and gadgets freak I am...

So here's an image of some older Samsung phones I had in the past:

IMG_0982 copy

And here's the Omnia in my hand:

omniahandy

Perfect, and now we can finally begin with the review:

The shell parts include the TouchWiz interface (which I didn't like and immediately disabled), a nice main menu screen (including 2 pages, 1 configurable page for shortcuts and a lot of settings pages), and a second today screen with some plug-ins.

sewll Screen58

FavoriteSettigns browser

The Omnia not only wraps the settings and menu, it also has an impressive number of applications designed in a finger friendly way providing a better experience than the standard Windows Mobile applications. Here's some of it:

Custom Clock and Alarm:

alarm

Custom Media Player:

Libraryaudioplayer

Media Album:

mediaalbum

Custom Phone Book:

phonebook

Smart Converter:

smartconverter

And my favorite one - the Smart Reader application which scans business cards and adds the details automatically to the address book.I've tested it and it's working absolutely terrific.

IMG_0979 copy

Another cool application is the Digital Frame which is working elegantly exactly as it should.

digitalframe

The nice thing is that all of those applications are working very fast and are designed to be finger friendly. They are some small improvements which should be done in some of the UI controls (for example, opening a combo-box does not show up on the selected item, instead it opens the list from the first item which is annoying), but in most cases the finger friendly UI is much better than the standard controls.

Camera:

The Omnia is packed with 5.0 megapixel camera with auto focus, but I must admit, once again, that I was disappointed with the camera. It's the second device (after the Touch Pro) which fails to impress me with the camera comparing to the iPhone.

Summary:

Since I started using the iPhone, I find it harder to get back to Windows Mobile devices. I still like the capabilities, but simple activities are harder to perform, there are many inconsistencies in the user experience, and the overall impression is that most of the new WinMo phones tries too hard to hide the fact that they are Windows mobile based.

The Samsung Omnia does a great job in adding entertainment and fun to the standard OS capabilities, but it does it without hiding the fact that this is a Windows Mobile phone.

The Omnia has good performance, it has some nice additions and a lot of built-in applications. the screen size is longer than the usual which turned out to be a big advantage, the virtual D-Pad is fun, and so is the silly virtual mouse.

The screen resolution and the camera are disappointing, I must say that.

Overall, the most significant thing I found in the Omnia is that it's a great fun gadget, one you really want to keep.

Tweak: Host Your Today Screen inside a TouchFlo 3D Tab

There's tons of TouchFlo 3D Tweaks out there, but this one seems like one of the most important ones:

Manila Today Page (MTP) v0.3.1.0 lets you host the classic WinMo Today screen inside one of the TF3D tabs!

Ha!

No seriously... I mean HA!

Here it is in action:

screenzmw

Here's what the developer had to say about it:

"Requirements:
.Net CF 3.5. You do not need to worry about .net memory usage because only MTP Configurator is written on .Net

Setup Instructions:
1) Setup MTPInstall.CAB to Main memory
2) Go to programs menu, run MTP Configurator.
3) Choose page to host plug-ins,
choose plug-ins you want to enable. Uncheck "TouchFLO 3D".
4) Click apply button. Close configurator.
5) Go Settings-> Today Disable TouchFlo3D. Click OK. Enable TouchFlo3D. Click OK.
5) Run MTPLoader
6) Selected plug-ins should appear on selected tab.
This is not ready-to-use version. For testing purposes only."

Head over to this XDA-Thread for more details and download links.

Important Note: I haven't tested it yet (my Touch Pro was brutally confiscated by one of my work colleagues...) but if one of you is trying that - please leave a comment about how it worked for you.

Found it over at the great WMPowerUser site.

If you like the idea and don't want to override one of the tabs, here's another alternative to achieve a similar functionality:

How To- Work with both TouchFlo 3D and the Standard Today Screen

Create your own ringtones using Ringtone Editor

Have you ever listened to a song and wished you could turn a specific part of it into a ringtone?

Sure you did, and in Vito Technology people understood that and decided to develop an application that does it perfectly.

icon

Vito's RingtoneEditor is the quickest way to create your own ringtones. All you need to do is listen to the melody and choose the part of it you want to assign as a ringtone. User-friendly intuitive interface greatly simplifies the process. You can create ringtones from mp3 or wav music files with optimized sound quality.

Since RingtoneEditor is now a part of a special spring package deal called "Tuned-In" - I decided it's a good opportunity to check out the 3 applications included in the package.

The first one is RingtoneEditor:

RingtoneEditor is designed in a practical way. The first thing you do is select a file. The file you would like to pull a ringtone from.

ringtoneeditor1  Screen99

The song I've selected is one of my favorites; it's called Lie lie lie by Serj Tankian (video attached below), and it starts with some piano sounds (9 seconds) followed by a great music part (30 seconds), and then the song itself which is good but doesn't fit as a ringtone.

All I wanted to do is pull those 30 seconds (second 10 to 40) and turn them into a ringtone.

(Sounds hard? Actually not at all!)

So as said, the first thing you do in the welcome screen is to select the song you wish to edit.

Then, the song starts to play, and all you need to do is click on the start button (which will start recording), and then, after recording enough portion of the song - click on the Finish button (after all, you do want to limit the size of the ringtone).

startringtonsfinishrecording

The bottom progress bar presents the portion of the song which will turned into your ringtone.

After recording is finished, there are a few steps that can be done using the Editor's main menu. You can play the track you recorded, edit it, save as a ringtone and also, assign it directly as a ringtone.

menu3finetune

The Exact Edit option is huge; the application assumes you could have missed the exact start / finish points so it lets you fine tune them using a very simple and friendly user interface.

If you ever tried doing such kind of tuning with one of those PC based songs editors, you probably know it's not an easy task to do, and it usually involves accuracy and a lot of patience.
RingtoneEditor makes it simple and easy thing to do which in my eyes, is the strongest features of the application.

Another cool thing is that once assigned, the ringtone is automatically copied into the ringtones folder of Windows Mobile, which of course, is required, but it's nice that you don't have to do it manually later on.

Summary:

Vito's Ringtone Editor is simple to use and does exactly what it needs to do. It's working fast, and really "spoils" the user with a friendly user interface and a strong editing capabilities.

I recommend you jump over to Vito Technoligy's website and check out RingtoneEditor. There's also a 14-day trial version.

Download Ringtone Editor

And now, since I've mentioned it - here's the song I turned into a ringtone in just 2-3 minutes:

Enjoy!

Finally Found: iPhone Killer

x-men2- cop32yWe thought the Diamond will kill the iPhone, but that was just a joke,(right?).

We truly believed Samsung Omnia will do the work, but the iPhone isn't dead yet...

Storm copy2RIM gave it a shot with BlackBerry Storm.

It had not impact so they decided to make another one, but in the meantime, call the Touch HD!
