Nokia and Motorola introduce 2 new mobile financial services

MOTOROLA M-WALLET

We all knew that the ability to make money exchange through mobile devices will be here very soon (in many places you can already pay for parking and other services through your mobile) - but now it's really here.

Nokia and Motorola (a week after) both announced their new mobile financial services recently.

The rational behind it is very simple, as described in here:

"We believe mobile financial services offer a market opportunity with long term growth potential. In many countries, mobile phone ownership significantly exceeds bank account usage, suggesting that many mobile phone users have very limited or no access to basic financial services. With more than 4 billion mobile phone users and only 1.6 billion bank accounts, global demand for access to financial services presents a strong opportunity to combine mobile devices with simple but powerful financial services such as Nokia Money", said Mary McDowell, EVP and Chief Development Officer, Nokia.

Mobile payments will be the next step for delivering financial services to hundreds of millions of people, both urban and rural, who are undeserved by existing payment means, especially in emerging economies.

OK, so now that it all makes sense, let's talk a little bit about technologies:

Nokia Money:

Nokia just announced Nokia Money, a new mobile financial service enables financial management and payments from a mobile phone.

Nokia Money can be used from any mobile phone running... Symbian, so it seems like Nokia will have to do something about it really soon if they intend to make it "standard".

The Nokia Money service will be operated in cooperation with Obopay, a leader in developing global mobile payment solutions, which Nokia invested in earlier this year. The service is based on Obopay's mobile payment platform, with unique and newly developed mobile elements. Nokia intends the service to be open and interoperable with other payment services as well.

You can read more about Obopay in here

Motorola M-Wallet

Motorola took a different path for the money services - this time it's both software and hardware. The company created the I-SIM NFC (near field communication) Lite card, a small card nearly the size of a common mobile phone SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card but much thinner. The card contains chips that can store and transmit information including credit card, debit card, subway card, frequent flyer and other membership card information to transform a mobile phone into a payment device and more. Hold a handset armed with I-SIM NFC Lite up to a card reader to make a payment wirelessly the same way credit cards with similar technology work. Such technology can save time in check out lines because people can make quick payments without swiping a credit card and signing a bill, and can potentially take the place of a wallet.

One key to the new Motorola card is its size. It's made as a sticker to be attached to a mobile phone SIM card and fit inside the SIM card slot of a mobile phone. There's no need for operators to make customers pick up new a new SIM card. In fact, the SIM card attachment is designed to work with standard card readers as well, making them potentially useful in stores with card readers and cities that use card readers on buses, subways, trains or other systems.

Here, as well, I believe that the key to the success (or failure) will be the ability to support many devices and mobile OS.

The company is already talking to operators in China and Taiwan about using the cards and Motorola hopes Taiwan can be a testing ground for the technology.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how this new technologies will evolve and what kind of "standardization" will happen to it.

Samsung Omnia 2 Gets Reviewed

samsung-omnia-ii-overall

While checking the news in WMPowerUser I found a nice review of the new Samsung Omnia II. It's the first time I visited the site FreshGear and I must say it's refreshing!

omnia-ii-internet1 omnia-ii-smart-memo1 omnia-ii-midomi3 omnia-ii-audio-note1

The review focuses in the many custom applications the Omnia is loaded with, and also includes nice video demonstrations such as this one:

Samsung Omnia is one of our favorite Windows Mobile phone, and the second version of it seems to keep up with the high standards. The device looks beautiful and the UI seems to be improved over the first version. Nevertheless, it does have some weaknesses as you can see from the summary below:

Pro:

  • Superb wonderful bright screen
  • Excellent Camera
  • Built in many useful software; Namecard reader, call filter, video editor, Midomi…
  • Built-in Memory (2GB/8GB/16GB)
  • Very fast processor

Cons:

  • I would prefer a D-pad at the bottom for easy navigation
  • Would prefer to have the stylus built-in rather than an external one
  • Touch Wiz UI not as “smooth” as HTC Touch Flo
  • Even though it comes with 800Mhz processor, there are times it felt laggy.

Head over to FreshGear and read more about the Samsung Omnia 2.

MoMo - Memo to self - iPhone To-do list with web synchronization

momo

I was looking for a personal todo list when I found this cool new iPhone app: it's called MoMo - Memo to self, and it operates as a personal blog.

file momo

It comes with a nice iPhone client that can also operate offline, and it synchronizes with the website which also gives nice web UI from your windows PC.

The company plans to create an offline client for PC as well, and once it is released - I believe this will become my personal todo list. For now I'm trying it from my iPhone mainly...

BTW, this nice app also supports pictures and twitter - cool!

Check MoMo site in here

What are you doing with your smartphone?

I recently found an interesting report by Forrester about location based services and mobile, but one chart particularly capture my eyes: the one that shows the interests of users in specific mobile phones features.

Check out Windows Mobile 6.5 new looks

winmo65new1winmo65new2

That's the way (a-ha a-ha) I like it! (a-ha a-ha).

Look at the Windows Mobile 6.5 look - Welcome to 2009, baby!

At last, the 'Start' button is in the bottom, close/OK buttons are at the bottom right corner as they should (this is the easiest location for the thumb), transparency, Android, iPhone, BlackBerry - say hello to your new friend: sure he's old, sure he's a bit outdated, but at least now WinMo he has a hot looks.

winmo65new4   winmo65new3

BTW, I believe the soft menus should be improved - they are too small to fit a long text and their shape can use some improvements too.

FollowTwitter

BTW x 2: I believe there will finally be a standard "running programs" UI - check our this screenshot:

Purchase Windows Mobile 6.5 or Wait for Windows Mobile 7?

windows-mobile7

Many people ask me about Windows Mobile 6.5; is it a temporary version to buy some time before Windows Mobile 7 is released? Is it something worth investing in?

According to DigiTimes, Microsoft are about to adopt a dual-platform strategy to compete with Android and iPhone.

Microsoft is expected to officially launch Windows Mobile 6.5 on October 1, 2009 and add an upgrade version with a touch interface in February 2010, the sources indicated citing Microsoft roadmap.

Towards the end of 2010, Windows Mobile 7 will be released but check this out: according to the source, Microsoft will not phase out Windows Mobile 6.5, instead, it will lower the OS price, allowing handsets manufacturers to develop cheaper devices with this OS.

FollowTwitter

The dual-platform strategy will allow Microsoft to compete with Android-based platform using Windows Mobile 6.5 and also compete with iPhones leveraging Windows Mobile 7, the sources asserted.

So, now you need to decide: are you anxious to replace your phone NOW and can't wait at least a year and a half (notice WinMo 7 devices will be out a months after the OS is ready), or do you prefer waiting with your older WinMo phone?

Your call.

Are iPhone apps spyware as well?

key_art_i_spy

After the recent hubbub surrounding the Palm Pre and its daily sharing of user location and other information with Palm, ... the iPhone Dev Team has revealed that some third-party apps for the iPhone act in a somewhat similar fashion.

You can read more about those apps that gets your private information and stores it in here.

But I say, why all the panic? Why investing hours in developing those spy capabilities and they few more hours to hide it when all the relevant details can be found in Facebook or Twitter?

I recently heard form a colleague of mine that a friend of hers used to update her facebook stats on an hourly basis, including a lot of private details about her personal activities, relationships with her husband etc.

She told me that since everything was so exposed - she, as a follower in facebook started to suspect something is wrong in the relationships between the writer and her husband, and indeed after a while the lady wrote that she is getting divorced.

In addition, someone who used to be my neighbor (20 years ago) just got married, and she put their entire wedding book in facebook. How lame can that be???

So, Palm, Apple, CIA, you don't need to work so hard, just do some Google search and find your stuff...

Rim is the fastest growing company in the world

rim-blackberry-bold-9000-series

I bet you all suspected already that RIM are doing great these days/years, but according to Fortune, RIM is the fastest growing company in the world. It's also the company with the fastest growing technology.

I tend to think of RIM as a great wonder. It started with some really bad looking devices, a textual user interface which was similar to... notepad, and above all - a very limited operating system with limited functionality. But, the wonder of it was that everything RIM did was a perfect fit for the targeted users. Perfect fit. I think even the limitations were a perfect fit in a way...

Another reason why I think of the BlackBerry phenomenon of a true wonder is that few years ago, Palm and Microsoft were still very dominant in the PDAs market, which made the competition for such a small company futureless.

FollowTwitter

So, although I don't consider myself to be a fan of RIM, (Although I really enjoy the Bold), I'm really happy that the BlackBerry is part of the mobile world. It had an important role in creating the standards we are all used to nowadays.

iSwap Faces - a cool app to pass some time with

IMG_0012 copy

iPhone is a great tool to pass the time by doing useful things. Important things... Productivity stuff, as they are usually being tagged...

Here's one of the best productivity tools for the iPhone. It can really pass the time when you are in a boring meeting, and meetings are related to productivity, right?

The tool that does this special effect is called iSwap Faces, and it also has a free trial called iSwap Faces Lite.

Try it out, I think it's a great app, and given that most of us take a lot of pictures - I bet it will be very simple to find some swap candidates...

How to: Port your iPhone app to Windows Mobile

A question for the readers:
Did you ever want to port your favorite iPhone apps to your Windows Mobile phone?

I guess not, typically iPhone users don't have a WinMo phone, but here's another question, this time for the developers who are reading the MobileSpoon:
Did you ever want to make a few extra bulks by porting a popular iPhone app to Windows Mobile?

I guess the answer to that would be yes: so just because I care about you, here's a link to a tutorial explaining how to port an iPhone app to Windows Mobile. Enjoy!

HTC patent - a magnetic stylus for capacitive screens

magneticstylus_thumb

I know a few readers that are surely going to comment on this one:

Few weeks ago I wrote a small guide about the different touchscreens available for mobile devices (The Incomplete Guide to Touchscreens Technologies).

One of the things I wrote about capacitive screens was that they cannot be used for accurate operations or signature capturing.

FollowTwitter

Well, apparently HTC are just about to solve this limitation with a special stylus - developed as a company patent.

The stylus has a magnetic head, and due to the current induced by its movement relative to the capacitive screen is able to elicit the same electrical reaction as a finger, but with much more precision.

So simple yet so useful: a stylus for capacitive screens that will let you do all the activities which are hard to do without one.

Nice initiative from HTC, don't you think?
