Smartphones Weekly Roundup

Smartphones-Council

This week we have some interesting news, games and of course, one big fat iPhone… sorry, iPad.

The Mobile Spoon:
This week the Spoon got a little depressed with at least 5 features the new iPad misses. Lucky there are plenty of jokes to cheer everybody up
And while Apple made all the noise, we found that WinMo 6.5.3 was quietly released

JAMM:
We spent some time over at JAMM covering and sharing our thoughts, both positive and negative on the upcoming iPad.  We also shared some interesting reviews on Resco's Photo Manager 7 for Windows Mobile and a brilliant little utility that toggles bluetooth on and discoverable at the same time.

RescoPhotoManager7

MobilityDigest:
This week Windows Mobile gained a little friend - Android, and now we can dual boot some devices to run either WM or Android. We also witnessed the forums at XDA open their doors to a few new friends in the form of WM devices that are not made by HTC.

genydualbootug

1800PocketPC:
We have some amazing game reviews for this week. For racing fans we put 3 games
1) Snow Rally City Stage
2) Asphalt 4: Elite Racing HD
3) Ferrari GT: Evolution HD
up for review for puzzle fans we have Peggles Mobile and  SpinBalls. We haven't forgotten about hack n slash fans and so for you we have Prince of Persia.

PocketNow:
For Apple fans out there, the iPad was introduced with a revolutionary data plan and a high bar set for mobile productivity. For non-Apple users who still can't decide between Android and Windows Mobile, even with the dual-booting hack broken by Mobility Digest, there's now a Max Sense UI theme that combines the best of both world. If that still doesn't rock your world, stay tuned for Mobile World Congress where we'll be hearing more Windows Mobile 7, with some possibly high end specs.

iPhone gains popularity in the enterprise

MobileSpoon-Mobi-Version

Although we usually see the iPhone as a great entertainment gadget less efficient for work, a recent research by the New York Times talks about the fact that during 2009 the number of companies using iPhone has doubled itself. In addition, around 70% of the companies listed in the fortune 100 are examining switching to the iPhone, mostly thanks to the improved support for Exchange.

Interesting.

Personally I find it hard to work with the iPhone mainly due to the lack of built-in multi-tasking (although this hack is really a great workaround).
As a result, I now work with the BlackBerry Bold on one hand (emails, documents and tasks, phone) and play with the iPhone on the other hand (photos, music, games, phone).

[BTW, the image above shows the new MobileSpoon site for mobile devices – check it out in The Mobile Spoon – Mobile Friendly Edition

5 Basic things the iPad misses

Apple-iPad

1. Stylus:
I know it's old fashion, but by the size of it it can make the perfect notebook replacement.
Oh wait, no, you cannot write with it… it doesn't have a stylus…

2. Multi-tasking:
I would like to be able to use twitter, facebook, mails, spreadshots – all at the same time. Is that too much to ask?

3. Keyboard:
No need to explain this one of course

4. Desktop-like Applications
When the screen size can allow it (and it does), I do want to see more buttons, menus, options that give me a full control over my application content.

5. Mouse:
You know, being able to work with a centralized controlling device (imagine how tired your hand will be after using the thing for 20-30 minutes when everything you need to do requires a lot of movements across the screen; up, down, up, down, multi-touch, up, down…)

Anything I missed?

Apple iPad… Not sure I understand it…

You know the drill:
- Apple releases something amazing.
- We all get excited and disappointed at once.
- All the Apple fans are standing in line to get one.
- We all attack it, compare it to a stone, laughing at it
- Second and third versions are released
- We all get one.

Apple-iPad

So like most of the gadgets fans out there, I watched Apple's announcement, and liked the eye candy tablet.

What is this thing exactly?
But, there are questions to ask: what is the working mode of this thing? Will the simplicity of the iPhone be enough when people will want to do more with their device? Is it a stunning object people will buy to be seen with or really use?

iPad-Apple-MobileSpoon

Take  for example the following scenario: I want to hold down my SHIFT key, select multiple emails with my mouse (oh, no mouse, I forgot, so my other hand) and then delete all the selected emails at once. Will I be able to do that?

No multi-tasking… Again?!
How will people work with a netbook substitute without multi-tasking? This is for me a deal breaker (although I may end up buying the damn thing just for the sports).

How can I use my emails, while reading an interesting site and linking to it from my twitter client – all in front of me at the same time, when there is no multi-tasking?

Must admit this is somewhat funny…

Apple-iPad-Picture

Keyboard… Yes, Again:
With the iPhone, the lack of keyboard was solved with a brilliant virtual keyboard which replaces a tiny physical one – both options are not perfect so the gaps between the physical one and the virtual is not big enough to become a real issue (even though for some of us it is).
When it comes to netbooks – this is not the case, having a keyboard seems like a real need, and the virtual one, as good as it will be, might cause some issues.

What about Camera?
Yes. What about it?

Emm… does it have Flash support?
Great question! Nope! It does not.
Not that I mind that much, but hey, is it a mutant iPhone or a tablet? If it's a mutant iPhone, fine, I will stick with my smaller one, but if it's a tablet, let me see all the sites I expect to see with a tablet.

But… Remember the iPhone:

Will the iPad revolutionize the tablets/netbooks world like the iPhone did for the smartphones? Or will it be a high-end super fancy gadget for Apple's fans?

For now it seems like it misses some key features, but we all said the same thing about the iPhone and we all know what happened in the end…

RIM lovers – check out MyBlackBerry

myblackberry

RIM has recently announced a new site called MyBlackBerry – the official online BlackBerry® community.

The new site (also integrated with facebook) allows BlackBerry users to share their experiences, download free stuff and use the BlackBerry App World.

Interesting stuff although I couldn't find any mobile client for it just yet (RIM, how about you fix your browser first so we can all enjoy those sites from our handheld device?)

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 - Quietly Released

Windows-Mobile-6-5-3

After getting spanked by almost every respected tech / blogger with the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, it seems like Microsoft has decided to keep a low profile with the almost confidential release of Windows Mobile 6.5.3.

windows_mobile_6_5_second_edition

Version 6.5.3 has already quietly been released to manufacturing in December of 2009, according to a reliable source. There will be no announcement of this version. It will simply show up on shipping products whenever manufacturers are ready.

As you can see the top area was completely replaced with a smaller notifications bar. Clicking on it opens up a new improved notifications window.

In the bottom area, the traditional OK/X button now falls into the bottom right corner, the 2 soft menus are still located in a similar manner, and the start menu is now where it should be in the bottom left corner…

All of those buttons are now completely finger friendly.

I must say I really like the changes Microsoft did, especially placing the OK or X button in the lower area, making it much easier to reach it with the thumb.

I've tried installing the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 SDK and found that applications run seamlessly without facing any issues caused by the new user interface.

ClickMobile-on-WinMo6-5-3

ClickMobile, the product I'm responsible of (in my real life) is running nicely on WinMo 6.5.3 and I found the new modifications extremely usable.

What's the fastest way to write?

Typing-MobileSpoon

Pen and paper? Full QWERTY keyboard? iPhone virtual keyboard? What is the fastest way to write down a text?

Phil Gyford tried out a few different methods, and found that there's no real surprise in his results.

The Spoon's comment: BlackBerry is missing form this test, based on my own experience the BlackBerry keyboard allows faster typing than the iPhone, therefore could have finished in the second place.

Smartphones Weekly Roundup #3

Smartphones-Council

Smartphones weekly roundup is back with some cool news and updates from different mobility sites:

PocketNow:
It's been a busy week with Windows Mobile 7 rumors, with two editions of the platform, business and media editions. We also are beginning to see two new Windows Mobile 7 devices, the HTC Diamond3 and the LG Apollo), both supporting high-resolution screens and 720p! Lastly, on the hardware news, Palm seems to be severing its Windows Mobile relationship and have forged ahead with Verizon to bring the webOS Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus to the US, of which we reviewed.

MobileSpoon:
After many reports about a disappointing Nexus One, this week the Spoon has renewed his love to his iPhone with some tweaks for a brilliant multi-thread support.

NexusOne-Torn-Apart-MobileSpoon

JAMM:
Better late than never, we finally got our hands on a Windows Mobile 6.5 based device at Just Another Mobile Monday.  Find out what we thought in this look at the Samsung Intrepid.
IMG_1750_thumb
And don't miss our very own Chris Spera, who appeared on Tech TV, in the form of TechVi's Bottom Line.

MobilityDigest:
This week we were treated to some nice Windows Mobile software with the release of I Left My Phone At Home, OpnMarket (for freeware apps), Pocket Plasma and an update of MyMobiler. At the same time we had a chance to look at the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pre Pixi for Verizon.

1800PocketPC:
Check out the new Task Manager called ArkSwitch for WM6.5.1 and above. To use it, simply click the left half of the top bar. The right half still has the normal WM6.5.x icon enlargement functionality.

The Mobile Spoon Goes Mobile!

MobileSpoon-Mobi-Version

Hi all!
Following Matt's comment about our lack of mobile browsers support, I've created a mobile version of the Mobile Spoon!

The mobile friendly version can be found in http://mobilespoon-mobi.blogspot.com

You can also view a link at the top of the page that will switch from Desktop mode to Mobile mode.

MobileSpoon-Mobi

In the next few days I will continue improving the mobile site to include search, popular topics and more.

Matt – thank you for bringing that up!

Is Windows Mobile 7 coming to MWC?

zune-HD-008-620x298

MobileCrunch has published a nice post about Everything you need to know about Windows Mobile 7.

They say WinMo 7 will be announced next month in MWC. I'm actually debating that, since we all saw the new WinMo 6.5.7 early builds.

So, in my opinion, one of the following will happen, either Microsoft will disappoint us all (once again I might add), by announcing Windows Mobile 6.5.7 or, it may show off with both versions: 6.5.7 and an early build of Windows Mobile 7, to keep us waiting…

I'm waiting…

Hey PC, Wanna be my friend?

MS-Apple-Friends

A new enemy can make old time enemies great friends.
We all know that one, and it seems like Microsoft and Apple are now talking about turning Bing into Apple's default search engine.

Surprise? I actually think it's a smart action if the two would like to find some kind of way to fight Google.

Let's see if that would become part of the changes in iPhone 4.0…

iPhone 4.0 – here I come!

surfer copy

The debate about what is the best mobile operating system never ends, it's just becoming harder to pick the better option.

Of course everything is subjective, but as I used to be a WinMo guy and completely moved to iPhone, I recently realized most of the technology blogs and sites owners have switched from something to iPhone.

What does it mean? Since many of them are getting all kinds of phones, the fact that they are eventually returning to the iPhone means a lot.

I recently read about a speculation that the next iPhone will be released around April. Regardless if it's true or not, and even though I'm far from being an Apple fan, I'm planning to replace my old iPhone 3G with the next iPhone which in my opinion continues to lead the way.

I recently read about a speculation that the next iPhone will be released around April. Regardless if it's true or not, and even though I'm far from being an Apple fan, I'm planning to replace my old iPhone 3G with the next iPhone which in my opinion continues to lead the way.

Add multi-threading to support your iPhone

This week I renewed some of the love to my iPhone by adding a bunch of cool new tweaks and apps to my jailbroken phone.

Multi-threading is one of the biggest problems raised when talking about Apple's toy, for me it is no longer a problem, thanks to an application called Backgrounder.

Multi-Threading Comes to iPhone:
Backgrounder will let you minimize your running apps without really closing them. This means the status of the app is kept and things are continuing to run in the background (for instance, downloading files, listening to Pandora radio while using GPS navigators and more).

iphone_background

Palm Pre Running on your iPhone:
If background threads are not enough, how about Palm Pre's cards style tasks manager?
ProSwitcher comes as an addition to Backgrounder and gives the ability to press the home button for long and by that – opening the cards interface and easily go back to your running apps. I must say this tool works amazingly – it feels integral part of the iPhone OS.

ProSwitcher-MobileSpoon

BTW, ProSwitcher also comes with a large number of configuration points, I really like the flexibility of this tool.

Both applications can be downloaded using Cydia and are still FREE!!!

Is Nexus One Disappointing?

NexusOne-Torn-Apart-MobileSpoon

After BGR complained about the poor sensitivity of the hardware buttons, criticizing the Nexus One seems more trendy than kicking WinMo's butt.

Does it mean that Google has officially joined the group of bad evil giants that are only seeking for worlds domination and disregards the customers needs? Maybe. Here are some of the latest problems found in the Nexus One:

The Tech Inciter writes about Google's lack of good technical support and the fact that it could and probably should be a reason not to get the Nexus One: "Google is learning that what works for freebies doesn't cut it for $529 smartphones. Since its introduction last week, support forums have been busily documenting customer problems, mostly 3G service issues, which T-Mobile has acknowledged. Google admits it offers no telephone support and can take three days to answer e-mails."

Ouch.

PCWorld reports of a series of problems with Nexus One which are being reported in many forums. Of course it's natural that such things happen, but it seems like the positive buzz was replaced (and probably way too fast) with a negative one.

Android and Nexus One are not invulnerable.

And BGR found some interesting numbers given by analytics firm Flurry, indicating the Google Nexus One sold an anemic 20,000 units in its first week of sales comparing to much higher numbers of other leading smartphones.

flurry-nexus-one

Does it mean the Nexus One is bad? I believe this is still one of the best smartphones out there, but it does mean it's much harder today to impress the audience, and it also shows once again that compromising on quality of debug is not always the correct approach.

But, for all of you Google Fans out there - here's one positive forecast given by MobileCrunch - stating that In the end, Google and Android will own the smartphone market. It won’t happen this year and it may not even happen in 2012 but the day is coming when Android becomes the de facto standard for smartphones.

"While product in pipeline is also nice, I think the real value is in the software. At CES we saw Dell and Lenovo releasing Android phones running Android but without – and this is important – major Google branding or applications. This is, in the end, why Android will soon rule the roost: carriers can remove functions as it sees fit, thereby creating entirely new versions of the OS and UI for their own purposes."

I still want one, just for the sake of science.

Is that the world's toughest handheld ever?

TK6000-Handheld-mobilespoon

Even though most of the following scenarios are not likely to happen in the real life - it's still one of the craziest videos I've seen, demonstrating the capabilities of the world's toughest rugged windows mobile PDA.

Check out the TK6000, from Juniper Systems.

Here are some specs:

  • GSM cellular data modem expansion pack, optional (in North America)
  • Magnesium enclosure - Survives multiple 5 foot drops to concrete
  • Robust alphanumeric keyboard for high production data entry
  • Outdoor readable color display
  • Supports two batteries offering up to 32 hours runtime
  • Two RS-232 serial ports, host and client USB ports
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

How to: track down paid apps that are currently free

Free-Apps-MobileSpoon

One of the great things about the app store is that there are so many apps, it forces apps developers to try and promote their app by giving it for free for a limited time.

This is exactly where Free Apps gets into the picture. This cool little app checks the app store every once in a while and updates the list of applications that used to cost money but are now for free!

The UI is not the greatest but comparing to other similar alternatives it works extremely fast and efficient.

Definitely a recommendation by the Mobile Spoon.

Can you pour me some more battery?

dzn_Eco-friendly-phone-for-Nokia-by-Daizi-Zheng-1

When I was in my twenties, I used to work as a fitness trainer (yes, I wasn't always an ultimate geek), and one of the people I trained which had an amazing progress rate always bragged that he has found the ultimate formula: eating Pizza and drinking Coke.

Of course, it never made sense, but no one could argue with results, and the man showed results beyond normal.

Did he found a secret source of energy?

Apparently, it's not a secret anymore. Here's a Nokia phone prototype that uses sugary drinks instead of a battery...

dzn_Eco-friendly-phone-for-Nokia-by-Daizi-Zheng-2dzn_Eco-friendly-phone-for-Nokia-by-Daizi-Zheng-3dzn_Eco-friendly-phone-for-Nokia-by-Daizi-Zheng-4

Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out. Bio battery has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries and it could be fully biodegradable.

Cool, and if you are really thirsty... you know... OK, maybe not.

Google Nexus One Gets Torn Apart. Again. And Again.

After all the praises - it's time to calm down a little bit to find out that nothing is yet perfect in the kingdom of Androids.

Let's tear down the Nexus One a little bit, won't we?

First, a real tear down by iFixIt resulting in... this:

Nexus-One-Tear-Down

BGR tested the Nexus One and thinks it's still undercooked.

The screen is not usable in the sunlight, there are inconsistencies in the software, the Exchange support is still mediocre and it seems like the BGR still prefers the iPhone or the BlackBerry (each for it's own strengths) over Android.

Oh, and there's that sensitivity problem in the hardware buttons (with a good video demonstrating the problem)

In addition, it seems like Boy Genius has managed to find many irritating flaws that only an experienced iPhone user can find: inconsistent shortcuts size effecting the touch events, limited copy/paste, messy apps market, no human emotion and many missing features.

Check out BGR beating the sh<beep>it out of Android (and then taking a beating back from all the fandroids out there...)

EngadgetMobile Still Prefers the Droid:

Reading Engadget's Nexus One review - feels, again, as if it's a great phone, with good specs, but not the Earth-shattering, paradigm-skewing device the media and community cheerleaders have built it up to be.

Or, as Engadget wrote: "just another Android smartphone".

Nexus One vs. iPhone:

We'll finish today's beat with a comparison between iPhone and Nexus One, in which, surprise surprise, iPhone wins...again.

So here's a question:
Who should buy the Nexus One?
BlackBerry users might find it's less convenient for business use, iPhone lovers will probably be disappointed with the overall UI like BGR did.
That leaves us with... Symbian and Windows Mobile users?

What do you think?

How many mobile devices have you ever had?

The 6th Annual SPB Survey is over. More than 11 000 forms were filled (almost twice as many as in the last year).

SPB has recently published the results and although there are a few SPB apps for the iPhone, it's clear (and can be seen in the results) that most of SPB's customers are using Windows Mobile.

Notice that 45% of the people mentioned they used more than 6 devices so far (???) - isn't that really A LOT?
