Who's getting an iPad?

iPad-mobileSpoon-Hellboy

So yes, I'm weak.
Yes, I'm easy to seduce.
No, I was never an apple fanboy.
No, I never used a mac.
No, I don't like the way Apple is conducting the latest moves.
Yes, I really like Microsoft in general.
Yes, I love Windows 7, I think it's great!
No, I do not need another gadget.
No, I do not have spare money.
Yes, I ordered an iPad.

Getting it in a few days.

Sorry… Couldn't help myself…

And yes…
I guess I am slowly becoming an apple bi<beep>tch.

Screen, screen on the device, who has the prettiest display of them all?

Sony-Samsung-NexusOne-180x300

OK, not sure I managed to rephrase the "mirror, mirror" phrase that well, but let's leave it for now…

If you are reading the mobile blogsphere on a regular basis, you probably saw that HTC gives up waiting on AMOLEDs, switches to SLCD on Desire and Nexus One.

So first, it's nice to know the Nexus One is still around

But, regardless to the comparison between the two technologies (Video- S-LCD vs AMOLED vs S-AMOLED vs LCD), and to the fact one is older than the other – there is one key thing here: mobile hardware vendors are struggling to keep up with the demand!
I think that's amazing!

If you think that's amazing too – follow me on twitter!

Oh, and one more thing, from what I saw, when working with the Nexus one, the battery life was one of the weak points of this handset.

The S-LCD is supposed to save battery life which can only help the new HTC/Android based handsets.

$35 iPad-like touch-screen tablet

 _48464417_009851003-2

According to BBC:

"The Indian government has unveiled the prototype of an iPad-like touch-screen laptop, with a price tag of $35 (£23), which it hopes to roll out next year.

Aimed at students, the tablet supports web browsing, video conferencing and word processing, say developers.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said a manufacturer was being sought for the gadget, which was developed by India's top IT colleges.

An earlier cheap laptop plan by the same ministry came to nothing.

The device unveiled on Thursday has no hard disk, using a memory card instead, like a mobile phone, and can run on solar power, according to reports. "

My comment (and I admit, not a brilliant one…): "Oh no! have you seen the error message, XP Style toolbars and horrible UI?!"

a_Supercheap_Comput616852_m

But I guess it's $35, which does seem like a low price.

Apple made a boo-boo. Make it all better.

Something that started as a joke is probably becoming real: Antenn-ait is here! I just love it!

iPhone-Boo-Boo

You can buy the Antenn-aid in packs of six for $4.99 plus shipping. Does it work? The official website says it “Works like magical.” Well done, fellas, I think it looks much better than those goofy bumpers….

Did the iPhone kill Nokia?

Nokia-is-dying-MobileSpoon

It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of Nokia's smartphones. To me they look & feel completely outdated, and user interface is close to my heart.

I read today that second quarter was pretty bad for Nokia with an "impressive" decrease of 40% in the company profits. Main reason, is the fact that the company had to lower the price of its' handsets due to the tough competition by iPhone and Android based devices.

Nokia also reported a sales decline of some 25% and a shipment decline of 15%.

Feeling bad for Nokia? Follow me on Twitter!

In fact, I found some statistics saying that since the launch of the first iPhone, Nokia's stock price has lost 2 thirds of its' value while Apple's stock doubled the value…

Can Nokia pull out of it or will it end like Palm?

The Incomplete Guide to Tower Defense Games (for iPhone)

applist-Tower-Defense-Games-ver1b
Tower Defense games are one of the most popular games genre in the AppStore, during the past 2 years I've been trying a lot of TD games, here's an extensive list of recommended alternatives.
Oh, and of course, I saved the best 2 for last…
Enjoy!

GeoDefense:
Ok, for some reason, this is one of the most popular TD games in the AppStore. I tried playing with it, I really tried, but I just cannot enjoy those graphics. I know it's a matter of taste which probably prevented me from enjoying the game – so maybe it is as good as people say it is?
GeoDefense-MobileSpoon
Magical Tower Defense: A great idea with a performance not that great. Here the path is pre-defined, but the main problem is that the game doesn't have that "extra" magic (although the name hints that it does…) that will make you want to continue and play with it some more.
Magical-Tower-Defense-mobileSpoon

Plants Vs Zombies:
OK, so this one a bit different than the others, here the enemies are walking in lines, and you need to stop each of them in his own line. Different, but refreshing, I haven't found myself completely addicted to this game yet, although I know it's very popular in the AppStore.
Plants-vs-Zombies
7 Cities: This Tower Defense game is one of the greatest ones: sound is superb, graphics are good, controls are good. Well done!
Here's a complete review of the game
7-Cities-MobileSpoon-iPhone
Bugs Defense:
A colorful / childish TD game, a great idea, but sometimes the controls are not easy to use and the interface is a bit clunky. Nice game but probably not the best TD around.
Bugs-Defense-MobileSpoon-iPhone
Crap of Defense:
OK, I admit, I never really played this one, but you have got to admit the graphics are original!
Crap-Of-Defense-MobileSpoon-iPhone
Hero Defense: This is considered to be one of the hardest TD games.
It's working in portrait mode which is a bit unusual and has a lot of activities going on, sometimes too much.
Hero-Defense-MobileSpoon-iPhone
Marbles Tower Defense: This game is well made and polished. The controls are easy to use, but the game itself did not capture me.
The screen real-estate is being used differently than other TD games, where some of it goes for the controls themselves.
Marbles Tower Defense-MobileSpoon
Sentinel Mars Defense:
This one is considered to be one of the best Tower Defense games, but I must admit I didn't like the animation that much, although it's quite good.
Sentinel Mars Defense - MobileSpoon
TowerDefense:
I admit, I never played this game in my life, but I figured if it got the best name of all (well, at least it was the first to capture it…) I better include it in my list…
TowerDefense
Tower Defense Evo: No no no, Not HTC Evo, Tower Defense.
Similar to our number 1 game, but not quite as good…
Tower Defense Evo-MobileSpoon
Tower Madness This one lets you protect a pen of sheep from a selection of marching 3D alien baddies, who swoop in on elaborate flying saucers. Nice, but the 3D style is not my favorite kind of animation.
TowerMadness-MobileSpoon

  OK, follow me now.

The winners:

So, that was the list of recommended tower defense games, but for me there are 2 games that are by far better than all he others, here they are:
The Creeps! Almost the best Tower Defense game, but still, a little bit behind. Still, I really recommend on this addictive game, which has a lot of different scenes, levels and creeps…
Path is pre-defined, but the enemies, the levels, the sounds and graphics – are all first class.
The Creeps-MobileSpoon
FieldRunners OK, so this is my favorite Tower Defense Game ever.
It is, for me, the best iPhone game and the one I spent the longest time on.
Here the path is not defined so there is an importance to where you place your weapons.
Hours. Hours spent on this game. And it was worth it.

Free App Alert: Tap Studio Pro (iPhone)

tap studio pro-mobilespoon

I must admit I've never owned a "guitar heroes" kind of game. As someone who used to play real piano for 15 years, as well as guitar and drums – it just didn't seem like a real challenge.

Of course with the iPhone is different as having a 'tap tap' game is fun because you can use it everywhere but today I found about a game called Tap Studio Pro which is, in my opinion, the next thing in this games genre. This one allows EDITING the songs. Any song!

Is that cool or is that cool?

I spent a few hours editing some of my favorite songs and I found that playing them afterwards was much harder than just "inventing them".

But bottom line – this game is fun. Pure fun.

The app still has a lot of bugs, but it's currently free (for a limited time) so I suggest to get it while you can and later on wait for the bugs fixes…

I must admit I've never owned a "guitar heroes" kind of game. As someone who used to play real piano for 15 years, as well as guitar and drums – it just didn't seem like a real challenge.

Windows Phone 7 Technical Preview – everything you wanted to know

First Samsung devices running Windows Phone 7 are now available for developers (it's called "technical preview").

You can find a bunch of great video reviews over at ZDNet blog, here' one of them:

I have to admit, I admire what Microsoft did with the user interface – it's different than anything else (beside Zune, but it's also Microsoft's).

I don't think everyone will like it - it's a bit more "advanced" than just shortcuts, and the captions are cut and some would say it's weird, but I love it. And I give MS the credit for at least trying something new rather than just copying Apple's iPhone shortcuts model.

Here are some more resources to help you learn more about Windows Phone 7:

Bye bye Nexus One, was nice knowing you

RiseAndFallOfNexusOne

Maybe it's a new trend, maybe the giants are not invulnerable as they seem, but lately it seems like many mistakes are being made by the technology leaders:

Microsoft – Killing the Kin (after achieving poor sales numbers)

Apple – iPhone 4 (OK, I know they are selling well, but hey, the antenna issue is a total fuck-up)

And now – Google, with the Nexus One (which I never liked…), following the footsteps of many others, saying that there will be no more shipments of Nexus One coming from HTC.

BTW, there are now rumors that the original Droid is nearing end of life too, which is quite faster than I would expect from such a successful model… I guess the tight competition is indeed costly, and old devices just cannot last…

And besides, it seems like the life period of a handheld device these days is much shorter than it used to be 2-3 years ago, don't you think?

Source – Google places final nail in nexus one coffin

3 Reasons why Apple's solution to the Antenna crisis is bad

500x_russian-iphone_01

So regarding the antenna issue (you know… Apple… iPhone 4… you know what I'm talking about…). I was actually planning to purchase an iPhone 4, but for now I'm postponing those plans, I didn't like Apple's reaction to the Antenna crisis, and I don't like their solution which is simply not good enough for me.

I believe that even if a small percentage of potential buyers will do the same as me – Apple will feel the impact of the arrogant antenna design real nice.

500x_500x_tapescotch_01

I have to be honest here and say that I still iPhone 4.0 OS rocks, and the other device specs look fantastic. I also think other smartphones today have basic flaws (had a lot of issues with the Nexus one for instance) – but I expected Apple to come up with a much better solution.

So here's why I believe Apple's press conference (and the decision to hand over free cases) is not satisfying:

1. What about people who want a shiny "caseless" iPhone? They are paying a lot of money to get a device that looks great, thin, compact, elegant, but… err… guess what… must be hidden inside a goofy looking case…

2. What about the next shipments of iPhone4? Wouldn't it be wise to fix the problem by adding a tiny transparent layer of "something" to cover the problematic area? Oh, I know, once doing that – everyone will want to replace their current iPhone4 with the new one… Apple can't risk it…

3. What about radiation? I mean, now it's obvious that the human body is doming "something" when touching the antenna (otherwise we wouldn't see the bars dropping…), who knows what other side effects are there with this pathetic design – human body turning into a radiation shield or something…

Another thing I didn't like with the press conference was the attempt to drag other companies into the discussion… you made a silly design decision, you are screwed, don't bring others to the party…

Here's RIM formal reaction:

"Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."

- Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie

To summarize, for now I'm sticking with iPhone 3G. Sure, it's slow, but for now I don't see a reason why to give Apple a reword for their current behavior. I will wait for a little while, as I believe this issue will continue to create interesting news, and who knows, maybe iPhone 5 will be released sooner than planned?

What do you think about the way Apple handled this crisis? I would love to hear your thoughts about it…

MobileSpoon Recommends: Web Feeds for iPhone

Web-Feeds

If you like reading blogs, here's an iPhone app that can do the job for you: Web Feeds for iPhone is a great RSS reader that has all the usual offline/images/categories capabilities but it also has a few cool features that made me pick it after testing over 10 different other RSS Readers:

  1. It finds the feed address automatically, you just need to insert the website URL (yeah, I know, it sounds trivial, but most RSS Readers don't have that…)
  2. It allows "marking" a post, so you can mark multiple posts while reading and then, when you close the app, all the marked items are automatically pasted inside a new mail… This is great to keep interesting stories. It's also how I'm generating the Mobile Spoon Feeding posts…
  3. It has a simple but good enough UI.

So basically, those are the 3 things I found in Web Feeds that convinced me to dump my other RSS readers and stick with Web Feeds.

Here are some examples:

Smartphones sales continue to climb, but not for everyone…

Everyone are getting smartphones these days, and it seems like it's just a matter of few more years until all simple cell-phones vanish.

I've found some interesting statistics and included them over at MobileFever, click on the images to enlarge:

Global sales numbers are constantly going high, as Apple and HTC are clearly leading the game at the moment. Other companies such as RIM And Motorola continues to decline.

Transformers Zone: Will giant Optimus save the world from villain 68?

MobileSpoon-Optimus

Ever since I was little, my favorite TV series was the transformers. While all my friends admired Optimus Prime, I actually preferred the evil Decepticons, their ultimate soldier SoundWave and their super leader Megatron, one of the 100 greatest villains of all times (number 68 to be precise – full list below…).

megatron

Today I got this image (thanks for the top Amir) of a giant Optimus Prime, made our of five truckloads of car and trucks spare parts, standing tall at the Green Dream Park in China.

Cool. But I would prefer a gigantic Soundwave made out of the remaining of our old double cassette players everyone used to have…
