New iPhone 4 with a fixed antenna design to be released by the end of September

iphone_4_antenna

Oh, finally. I knew it would happen, and that's one of the reasons I did not want to purchase iPhone 4!

According to BGR, a new iPhone design is coming soon, and the main change will be around the antenna failure.

I'm just worrying about thousands of people who purchased a faulty device, getting a free bumper is one thing, but having a fixed model out of your reach is a completely different ball game.

you can read more about the rumors in here.

Palm's webOS 2.0 is getting close with an official SDK for developers

www_engadget5

In the past I was a great believer in Palm's webOS. Unfortunately it did not work out between us, and I never ended up having the Palm Pre.

On the other hand, I was not alone, and webOS turned out from a big promise into a good looking OS, still promising, but the kind of promises that don't deliver.

After Palm's acquisition by HP there are many people (including myself) hoping that webOS will get the resources, and attention it deserves.

First swallow? WebOS 2.0 is just around the corner with the official SDK recently released for developers.

Looks like we are about to see some new stuff from Palm:

  • Exhibition for Touchstone– Exhibition will allow developers to code their applications to perform custom actions when your webOS device is plugged into the Touchstone charger. If you have a Touchstone on your bedside table, and want your custom alarm program to be activated when the device hits the charger, this is now possible.
  • HTML5 Improvements — The HTML5 abilities of webOS will be improved with geolocation support and offline caching among other niceties.
  • Deep JavsScript access– Developers will be given access to lower level JavaScript functions. This will allow program creators to control a plethora of low-level I/O data.
  • Just Type feature — Palm has decided to give “universal search” a new tagline, Just Type. Just Type will have an API open to developers that will allow them to harness the functionality using their applications own data. The Just Type feature will also have something called “Quick Actions.” Our understanding of this feature is typing something like: “send tweet I love webOS” will result in said Twitter message being pushed out without the application ever being opened.
  • Stacks feature — Stacks is going to allow actions taken within the same workflow to be grouped together into cards. If you are in an email and click on a link, the browser card and email card will be “stacked” together. You can custom order cards into stacks if you wish but by default webOS 2.0 will be doing this for you.

Sounds yummy! (especially the stacks feature!)

Windows Phone 7 Web Browsing Compared to iPhone and Nexus One

Web browsing has become one of the most important things in mobile devices. It is also one of the things bloggers like to compare. Android vs. iPhone, iPhone vs BlackBerry, but wait – here comes a new player: Windows Phone 7! No more Windows Mobile cripple IE – now we are talking about a completely different ballgame.

PocketNow (one of my favorites mobile sites ever) have pitched the browsing experience on the only WinPho 7 handset to date — the LG Panther — against the iPhone 4 and a Froyo-powered Nexus One.

To me it seems like all gaps were closed. Flash is not that important and as time moves forward it will become less relevant (with Html 5 etc.), and speed looks fairly similar to all 3 models.

Enjoy the video!

The Mobile Spoon is under construction

under-construction

We are in the process of moving the mobile spoon to a new domain.

The new domain will be called: www.mobilespoon.net!

Since this process may take a day or two, there may be some issues using previous links that redirects the old addresses to the new one which is still not fully active. In those cases you will get an empty page. To fix it, just modify the URL address from '.net' to '.blogspot.com' and that should fix the problem.

We will be fully back on track within a day or two…

Thank you for following the mobile spoon!

Samsung Omnia 4 announced – Windows Mobile is still alive and kicking

Many years ago there was this great mobile platform called Windows Mobile.

The idea was simple: you take some of the capabilities of a desktop, put them inside a tiny device, replace the mouse with a stylus and you have a micro-computer. In other words, a PDA.

Years went by, better platforms were released, Windows Mobile lost the popularity and over the years, the dignity. The basic UI was replaced with inconsistent shell wrappers trying to imitate the competitors, and after a short struggle the platform surrendered and quietly died.

But is it?

Microsoft already announced that it will continue to support Windows Mobile for the next few years in parallel with the huge investment in Windows Phone 7, but we were uncertain how things will look like in the new world. Last night I read about the launch of Samsung Omnia 4!

thumb_350_Samsung-Omnia-735-Pro-4

That's right you guys – the Omnia, the same brand that started with the first Samsung Omnia which we really liked, continued with Samsung Omnia 2 which we really didn't like (read: Samsung Omnia 2 – The Magic Is Gone), and now version 4 (what happened to 3?) is here.

Still running the same old WinMo – but with version 6.5.3 and without too many disguises. It is what it is. A business phone for people who still likes Windows Mobile. Full QWERTY, touch screen, strong platform, nothing too fancy.

We are in favor of it.

You can read more about it in here.

Turn your iPhone into a virtual game board!

Here's a cool development: if you have a touch surface that supports multi-touch – why settle with 2-3 touch points when you can use more? And while you are using more, why not turn it into a game board?

This is exactly what the developers of Volumique have created: an app that turns your iPhone into a virtual game board, recognizing special game pieces when you place them on the screen.

What's next? Real Monopoly for iPad!

What is LG Optimus 7?

The LG Optimus is not a mobile version of Autobots leader Optimus Prime, it's the second LG handset to run Windows Phone 7 – Microsoft's anticipated new mobile operating system.

Optimus 7 next to a special friend:

The Optimus 7 phone comes on top of other devices such as the LG C900 , LG Panther, and Samsung Cetus – all running Windows Phone that seems to gain power before it's even released.

We should expect a very hot fall this yeat, don't you think?

Samsung Galaxy Tab – iPad's Cousin?

The Galaxy Tab - Samsung’s 7″ tablet device, was officially exposed few days ago. It looks impressive and I believe it's the first Android tablet (not including Dell Streak which I'm not sure we can call a tablet)

samsung-galaxy-tab-android-tablet

By now I'm sure you saw this kick-ass video about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab. If you haven't - here it is:

Nice looking stuff indeed. However, a closer look does show some similarities to the iPad/iPhone user interface. It's true that today everyone are stealing from everyone else, but still, as indicated here… you know what? why don't I let you choose for yourself?

Main shell:Galaxy-Tab-600x168

Hmm, looks familiar, what happened to Android's widgets based home screen?

Keyboard:
Galaxy-Tab-2-600x170

Hey, that looks too close isn't it? I know Android and those buttons look more like an iPhone keyboard – will the Galaxt Tab be running iOS? I guess not…

Combined layout:Galaxy-Tab-1-600x171

This is one of the things I love about the iPad, being able to work with both the navigation panel on the left and the actual content. I knew everyone will use this layout the minute I found that Google have changed their GMail layout when used from the iPad. Cool.

Calendar:

Galaxy-Tab-3-600x170

OK, this one is too much: same color, same design, what's going on here – can't Samsung at least change the color and the position of the tabs?

I'm still waiting for this Galaxy iPad, err, sorry, Tab to arrive, but I sure hope there will be some innovations about it.

Why I dumped my iPhone… for an iPad…

It has been 4 weeks since I got my iPad and love is in the air.

I really enjoy this gadget, I take everywhere I go, and I know at least 2 people out there who are jealous (oh, but not of me – of the iPad!).

iPad-mobileSpoon-Hellboy

But, this promising romance does have a cost. A great one.
Ever since I got the iPad, I want to dump my useless old iPhone!
Why? Because the iPad is so great it makes the iPhone look… well… I hate to say… but it makes it look useless, old, outdated, too small, slow, lame, tired, geeky, irrelevant, useless like an iPod Nano…

ipad_nano

After you use an iPad for a while you start to ask yourself - why settle with that tiny limited screen when you can get yourself a giant version, faster, with a much better screen (I do not have iPhone 4 yet), and a far better user experience?

True, iPad cannot fit a pocket, but who cares? It's lightweight and carrying it around is like carrying a notebook (the old fashion notebook of course…).

Yes my friends, the iPad thought me something about my smartphones habits; I found that reading mails, ebooks, RSS feeds, doing blogging, managing sites statistics etc can all be done using a smaretphone, but it's far more comfortable (not to mention fun) to do those activities from an iPad.

Of course, you can argue and claim it's even more comfortable to do many of those tasks from a laptop or a netbook – but the portability of those devices is so bad it turns the all experience into a bad one.

To me, the combination of the form factor, weight, battery life, and of course the great operating system (jailbroken of course) with the touch surface – make the ideal platform for "leisure working".
(hey I love that term: LEISURE WORKING. I should sell it!)

On the negative side I can say that I'm still missing some kick-ass games for the iPad, but I'm happy with the productivity apps which are are way better than the iPhone ones. Another thing worth mentioning, and that is on the positive side, is that with the large screen Apple created some very interesting user interface concepts, different than any desktop application out there, creating an innovative user experience. The kind of experience that makes design fans like me really enjoy working with the iPad.
Stay tuned with some more updates about my iPad impressions here at the mobile spoon.

Off-topic: I want a Chatman too!

chatman1

Yesterday, while desperately looking for a place to park my car (along with around 10 other frustrated drivers who did the same…), I listened to a gadgets radio show and heard for the first time about Chatman.

Chatman is a physical creator who connects to your computer via USB and integrates with your social networks/chats activities. It talks, makes funny voices, answers questions, learns and evolves and most importantly – warns kids about risks they may encounter over the web while chatting with strangers. Chatman has over 500 different actions and over 25 moods. The company who created Chatman is planning on releasing some applications for it and enable kids to build their own modules on top of it and exchange them with others.

The idea behind this is to give today's kids something real that can be a friend, will give some emotional feedback to things they do when they are out there (alone…) on the web.

Sounds cool?

Today I ran across a real Chatman at my office – I must admit the first thing I thought when I looked at the yellow thing was: "Damn! I'm getting myself a Chatman too!"

Chatman-mobilespoon2

Think about a Chatman for adults: you are making a move trying to impress someone over a chat and your Chatman suddenly goes: "pulling that same old trick again? boring!"

Or a Chatman for bloggers: you are writing your best content when your buddy BlogMan is saying: "stealing content from Gizmodo again are you!?"

Mobile Spoon Goes Orange!

Hi all,

After approximately 5 hours of working on the site, the mobile spoon facelift has been completed.

Please welcome the new Mobile Spoon!

MobileSpoon-newDesign

I've switched the dark background with a conventional white, the dark red was replaced with orange, and a bunch of useless links were removed.

Thanks for the people who sent me some feedback on the old design – I will appreciate any kind of comments on the new look & feel.

Enjoy the reading!

Back to the past: HTC Touch shipments hit the million mark in five months (Mobile Legends)

Here at the mobile spoon we decided to take a time out from dealing with new mobile releases and salute to some of the mobile legends that we all used to like (not too long ago).

HTC was a known manufacturer of smartphones and PDA's long before Nexus One and Evo were even a piece of design document, but I think that the Touch series was the point in which HTC, as a brand, really started to rise.

I remember the HTC Touch – a tiny device with a clean minimalistic design, running Windows Mobile, packed with some cool today plugins under the codename TouchFlo (yes, the grandfather of TouchFlo3D and Sense UI). The device was absolutely stunning and many Windows Mobile fans (yes, back at the time we were still the majority…) such as myself, ran to the stores to get one.

Here's what EngadgetMobile article looked like back in November 2007:

"Shipment of the HTC Touch line -- which includes the Touch, Touch Slide, and Touch Color -- have bobbled over the one million mark as of mid November. Figures are expected to close out the year at the 1.5 to 1.8 million mark, and considering how many launches are happening almost atonce, we're believing it. Congrats HTC, five months on and the little Touch that could seems to be hitting some pretty sunny numbers. Now how about a QWERTY Touch, perhaps the HTC Twerty, or Qwouch"

At the same page, back in 2007, another HTC device was reviewed: remember HTC Iris? (Who said only RIM knows how to make such kind of smartphones?)

I'm telling you, I don't know what went wrong with those great Windows Mobile phones! They were terrific!

Sex, Cheating, iPhone, Android, and a lot of crap

iphone_sex-lies-and-mobile-phones_jay-oatway_ben-kirchner1

So by now I believe most of you heard that iPhone owners have more sex than other smartphones owners.

Today I found that according to a dubious Study: Android users are dirty, dirty cheaters, and they cheat much more than other smartphone users (of course, much more, is an exaggeration…)

To me it sounds very logical: after all, if you don't get enough at home (as the first survey hints), you may look for opportunities "outside"… (which is what the second survey indicates).

Smartphones-and-sex

Fantastic stuff…

While we are working on this imbecility attack, why not try some other stupid theories:

It's clear that if you have an iPhone, you get much more cool games therefore must spend some of your nights at home, playing those games, while Android fans, as much as the platform is strong – have much less options! So they need to cheat.

Moreover, when you have a shiny iPhone – you take it with you to bars, you show it to everyone and as this survey shows there are better chances women will date you for that…

Regarding Windows Mobile users – the surveys wanted to include them as well but all 4 of them were not available to respond.

Oh yeah, here's another one:

Porn is very hard to find when you are an iPhone user, for Android users it's free, accessible, and everywhere – therefore Android users are horny most of the time, and when they are – they go out, trying to get a date, but then, (when they are out), they see how all the good looking people are walking away with iPhone users…

Lame.

This is by far the worst post I've ever written.

What operating system will RIM's BlackPad be running?

blackberry-blackpad-concept

I just read a weird rumor at ArsTechnica (the place where every rumor comes true…) mentioning the fact that the new BlackPad (RIM's attempt to create an iPad competitor) will not run BlackBerry OS.

Instead, says a new report from Bloomberg, RIM may use a custom OS developed by recent acquisition QNX to power its upcoming "Blackpad" tablet.

Hey?

So, if I'm a BlackBerry fan, who is seeking for a big, wide, powerful tablet device running my favorite stuff I may end up running something… else???

I'm familiar with companies racing to release "something" for a fast ;go to market' at the cost of compromising on quality etc. I don't believe in this approach.

To me it sounds weird. I understand how RIM's legacy OS may not be able to easily cope with the change in size/resolution/etc, but I think this decision may be a bit too risky.

The best iPad News Reader!

Mobile Spoon Recommends: NewsRack for iPad

iPad-NewsRack-MobileSpoon

There are many visually stunning news readers for iPad nowadays such as FLUD, FlipBoard, and others.

To me, those are al nice applications and they do seem to work out nicely as long as you are not looking for large amount of information.

For me, RSS reading is one of reasons I wanted an iPad. Research is something I do both for my work and my blogging hobbies (Mobile Spoon & MobileFever), and reading technology sites is something I do on a daily basis.

After trying a few news readers I've found the ultimate RSS Reader and it's called NewsRack.

iPad-NewsRack

NewsRack is, in my opinion, the best RSS Reader to date, here are just a few reasons why:

  1. Stable, convenient, fast user interface
  2. Automatically finds Feed URL based on the site URL (you know how annoying that could get)
  3. Integration with Google Reader
  4. Option to arrange feeds inside folders
  5. Marking specific articles as "Starred" or "Shared"
  6. Great sharing alternatrives
  7. Built-in browser – no need to leave the application to open the original link
  8. Option to arrange specific links inside a summary mail (I'm using that a lot to send myself the best links I found)

Items 2, 4, and 8 are critical for me when I'm reviewing the hot stories for a specific day, NewsRack really helps me arrange the information right. I absolutely love it.

XBox Live Games Capabilities in Windows Phone 7

Windows-Phone-7-Games

Microsoft is preparing to the comeback of the decade into the smartphones arena. Things are getting close to the official release of the interesting Windows Phone 7 and the company understands that just bringing more of the same would not be sufficient.

To ensure the success of the new platform, Microsoft had pulled the best stuff it can pull together. In the gaming area that's definitely XBox Live.

Few days ago at GamesCom in Germany, the company has announced some new game titles that would be available at launch: Ilomilo is here, The Harvest and even Halo! Fantastic!

Smart move by Microsoft and I think we are going to have a very interesting fall this year…

Why I returned my iPad

iPad-mobileSpoon-Hellboy

Don't worry, I didn't. I am never going to, never!

But I did receive a link to a brilliant article by Peter Bregman describing the last moments before returning his beloved iPad (Thanks Inbar for sending that one over).

Here are some quotes:

"It's too easy. Too accessible. Both too fast and too long-lasting. Certainly there are some kinks, but nothing monumental. For the most part, it does everything I could want. Which, as it turns out, is a problem."

"The brilliance of the iPad is that it's the anytime-anywhere computer. On the subway. In the hall waiting for the elevator. In a car on the way to the airport. Any free moment becomes a potential iPad moment."

"That's not a problem with the iPad," my brother Anthony — who I feel compelled to mention is currently producing a movie called My Idiot Brother — pointed out. "It's a problem with you. Just don't use it as much."

Worth reading, believe me, it even has a nice moral at the end:

Why I returned by iPad

Here are my own thoughts about the iPad after using it for 2 weeks (more reports to come soon)

10 great things iPhone brought to mobility

patents

3 Years too late, Apple has finally accepted two patents that were part of the original iPhone: “slide to unlock” screen and the way that characters on the keyboard jump up when you hit them.

As MobileCrunch indicated: "As usual, the patent process took a few years, and during those years, variations of these now-patented processes have appeared which will now almost certainly see some legal challenges. Does “slide to unlock” cover the Galaxy series’ lock screen, which is like sliding away a pane of glass? What about the Zune HD lock screen, which is like raising a garage door? What of WinMo 6.5, which (IIRC) let you slide different sliders to go straight to different apps?"

And I'm asking – what about the following ideas that were stolen by all other mobile vendors:

  1. Finger gestures to scroll down/up lists
  2. Automatic rotation from portrait to landscape
  3. Pinch to zoom
  4. Magnifying glass to place the maker in the right place
  5. Shortcuts pages as main shell
  6. A proximity sensor to deactivates the display when talking…
  7. Use of capacitive screens in mobility (no stylus!? no way!)
  8. Compass
  9. AppStore as part of the OS
  10. iTunes… OK you are right, I should have dropped this horrible piece of sh<beep>t.
  11. Invisible scroll bar that appears only when you are scrolling and doesn't take half of your tuny screen…
  12. No hardware buttons (I actually think it's a bad thing…)
  13. No "selection" concept in UI (think about it, you do not have a D-PAd in the iPhone, therefore opening a drop down list does not require scrolling up/down with the arrows!

Yes, I know, I promised 10 things in my title and ended up with 13. I always do that, I promise something and do much more… I'm such a great guy (you should follow me on twitter!)

BTW, LG has always claimed that the iPhone design was a copy of the LG Prada…

iBand playing iEye of the iTiger with iPAd

You have to see this one to believe it.

I've recently downloaded a few music instruments for the iPad, and I must say that although the touch screen is much harder to use than a physical instrument, the joy of using it everywhere is making those apps really entertaining.

Here's a bunch of weirdo's taking it to the edge. Enjoy!

Coming Soon: a Facebook tablet?

Facebook-Tablet-Coming-Soon-MobileSpoon

There have been a lot of speculations around a Facebook Operating System being secretly developed, aimed to compete with Google's Chrome OS which is not released yet.

Of course, with so many facebook addicts out there, browsing the internet through the social network makes a lot of sense, so why not do it from a dedicated tablet?

That's similar to what Google has envisioned with the Chrome OS, except that it's better – you get to do all the usual internet activities without loosing the ability to interact with your friends. The rumored operating system was also mentioned in regards to the "friends oriented search engine" that might become much more powerful than the usual search engines.

I recently received a concrete tip from inside about another project being done in the Facebook labs, to create a facebook-pad style tablet that will run the new Facebook operating system, and allow web browsing from the Facebook framework…

Of course, rumors come and go all the time, but in the past few years I've come to realize there is usually something true behind every rumor…

I guess we just have to see about that…

A new release for Google's Gestures Search App

Few months ago I wrote about a Google app which I think is more innovative than what people tend to think: gestures search for Android, allowing you to use your touch based handset with one hand without the need to be accurate with your fingers.

Google-Gestures-Search

Well, I believe many Android users find this little app extremely useful, and I wish more applications such as this would be created soon for other platforms as well.

Anyway, Google has just released a new version for this app which has some new features in it such as being able to flick your device away from you, and then back towards you, Gesture Search will activate all on its own.

First Field Service Application Running On Android - Emerges

ClickMobile-Running-On-Android Android-clickmobile-photo

Android's increasing success along with the infrastructure strengths of the operating system make Google's mobile OS a legitimate choice for many enterprise organizations.

It is clear that soon we will see more and more enterprise grade apps designed to provide end-to-end solutions for organizations seeking for strong and long term mobile solutions.

One example can be seen in what is about to become the first field service mobile application for Android based devices.

In the pictures – ClickMobile, ClickSoftware's mobile application for the service sector, a well known product that is running on Windows, Windows Mobile, BlackBerries and simple cellphones – making the first Android move.
